In November 2018, approximately 7000 migrants from Central America made global headlines when they arrived in the city of Tijuana, on the Mexico-US border.

The arrival of the so-called 'migrant caravan' fuelled US President Donald Trump’s calls to build a wall along the border - a signature promise of his 2016 presidential campaign.

The fight for funding for the wall led to the longest partial shutdown of the United States' government in American history, and eventually to President Trump's declaration of a national emergency.

With migration on the US-Mexico border dominating the news cycle, and migrant caravans continuing to roll into town, journalist Janak Rogers travelled to Tijuana to find out what life was like for those on the ground, both migrants and local residents.

Tijuana is notorious for being the most dangerous city in Mexico, and has its own entrenched problems of crime and violence. And while the city is struggling to deal with the migrant influx, it has also rallied to support and care for those who've come from Central America, hoping for a better life across the other side of the border.
